Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE)
We aim to promote healthy, independent and responsible members of the community. We encourage our children to play a positive role in contributing to school life. Our pupils are given opportunities in PSHE lessons and assemblies to develop confidence, self-motivation and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within our diverse society. To support this learning we use teaching resources created by Jigsaw.
Jigsaw is a mindful and child-centred approach to PSHE. It is a scheme of learning which integrates personal, social, health and economic education with emphasis on emotional literacy, mental health and Spiritual Moral Social and Cultural development (also known as SMSC), especially spiritual development. The Jigsaw approach is sequential and taught in an age approriate way building on previous knowledge. The six puzzles (units) start with 'Being Me in My World' at the beginning of each school year and work through to the end of the year finsihing with Changing Me. The six area are detailed below:
-
Being Me in My World- 'Who am I and how do I fit?'
-
Celebrating Difference- Respect for similarity and difference. Anti-bullying and being unique
-
Dreams and Goals- Aspirations, how to achieve goals and understanding the emotions that go with this
-
Healthy Me - Being and keeping safe and healthy
-
Relationships - Building positive, healthy relationships
-
Changing Me- Coping positively with change including relationship, health and sex education.
Each puzzle has six lesson plans accompanied by all of the teaching and learning materials needed to deliver them.
Relationship/Sex Education
Relationship/Sex Education
Relationship and Sex Education (RSE), previously called Sex and Relationships Education, is a form of sex education taught in UK schools. RSE focuses on exploring the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, having relationships, engaging in sex, and learning about human sexuality and sexual health.
The Department for Education has made changes to relationships and sex education following nationwide consultation which came into effect from September 2020 and all schools are required to comply with the updated requirements. The statutory guidance may be found at:
As RSE can be a sensitive subject to teach, we have included some Frequently Asked Questions you may wish to read:
Which year groups are taught this information?
RSE is taught from Reception right the way through the school to Year 6. However, the content of these lessons differs for each year group and is always age approroriate. The Jigsaw curriculum builds on previous learning and knowledge.
When is this area taught during the academic year?
RSE lessons are taught throughout the year and are embedded within our Jigsaw PSHE schemes of learning. It is at the class teacher’s discretion as to where this appropriately fits into the year. We have a particular focus on this subject as part of the Changing Me units of work that take place in the summer term. The overviews above include information on coverage and content in this area.
